Touring in France
Since the first rugby club opened its doors in France back in 1872, the French embraced the sport and did not look back. With countless clubs around all of the regions in the country, there will never be a shortage of friendly fixtures available to touring sides.France has a deep set rugby culture where matches are played on lush green pitches against the backdrop of some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe. Rugby in France tends to thrive in the villages and towns of the country rather than cities. In South West France in particular most of the small villages have their own rugby teams which form an important part of the social life of the communities. They welcome touring sides with open arms, especially if France has recently thrashed the touring country's team in the Six Nations!
Not only does the South West of France offer a competitive game of rugby, it also boasts incredible scenery. The area is situated between the Pyrenees Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean making for breath taking views. Sport is also some what of a tradition in the area, especially fishing, golf and skiing, this coupled with the close knit rugby culture makes the South West an ideal area of France for a rugby tour.
Although villages and towns in France provide the pulse of rugby in the country the real heartbeat is in the second largest city, Toulouse. The city is unique in that it is the only major city in France in which rugby supersedes football, bordering the South West; it is the gate way into the sport in this area of the country. One of the original members of the 5 nations, France is as serious about rugby as it is about romance and cuisine - now that's serious!
