It's Off To Wales!

Downingtown Rugby Club to stage benefit The Downingtown Rugby Football Club is holding a benefit flea market/car wash in the parking lot of Chick-filA in Lionville on Saturday, September 21 from 8am to 4pm. Club members are raising money to finance their trip to Wales in April of 2009.This group of motivated teenage rugby players from the U19 Boys team will travel to Wales next spring for a week of rugby games and touring. Scott Brown contacted Sports & Corporate Group Travel a specialist tour operator in the UK who immediately proposed a fantastic itinerary and travel package for the Club. Accompanied by parents, coaches and a team doctor, they will train with the Sale Sharks (a professional British rugby team) watch a professional rugby match between the Sale Sharks and Leicester Tigers, and play matches against teams from Abergavenny and Rhyl. Tours of castles, museums, and other historic landmarks will fill their limited free time. From now until April this touring team will be holding a variety of fundraising activities: ticket raffles, pizza sales, car washes, and of course, their flea market/carwash on September 21 at Chick-fil-A in Lionville (211 Eagleview Blvd., Exton, PA). The proceeds from all of these activities will directly defray the team's travel expenses.

Though British in origin, the game of rugby can trace its American roots back to 1874 when Harvard University hosted Montreal's McGill University, in Cambridge, Mass. In the 1970s the popularity of the game extended to the high school level. In 1995 the Downingtown Rugby Club was established for high school age boys. The club is now composed of four teams:

U15 Boys, U19 Boys, U19 Girls, and a summer "Sevens" team. Over 150 players belong to the Downingtown Rugby Club, representing approximately 100 local families. In recent years, the team has begun to travel and share their American culture and love of rugby in a variety of international venues, including Scotland in 2003, Ireland in 2007, and of course, Wales in 2009. In addition to specific fundraising events, the Downingtown Rugby Football Club is also looking for corporate sponsors. Anyone interested in supporting these motivated young players, or in joining the team, should contact Scott Brown.
